BONJAH On Fire In SE Queensland
(Friday, 02 January 2009) Written by James Johnson

They may not have the Bob Marley dreads or the Rasta coloured clothing but they’ve certainly got the reggae, soul-funk sound.

Kiwi-Melbourne based band BONJAH are playing a host of shows across South East Queensland including Koala Bar in Noosa on Wednesday Jan 7th, The Beach Hotel in Byron on Friday Jan 9th, Sol Bar in Coolum on Saturday Jan 10th and The Cavern on The Gold Coast on Monday Jan 12th.

It’s not only the soul satisfying, upbeat tracks that will make you crave more of the five blokes but their truly unique tale of origin and the journey they’ve experienced together.

Lead singer Glenn Mossop, originally from South Africa, couldn’t tell the difference between the strum of a D chord to that of a C, until his parents decided to flee South Africa for want of a better life.

So, Glenn, along with his little brother and parents piled into a small home-built yacht and sailed the seas for two years coasting some of the most magnificent islands of the world.

It was then that Glenn’s ear became trained to tunes as the only thing the boys could do to stay entertained was create music. Now, he plays seven instruments and has spine-tingling vocals.

The Mossop family eventually settled for a town in NZ called Tauranga.

The passionate musician was fortunate enough to meet two of the locals Regan Lethbridge (guitars, vocals) and David Morgan (bass) who he joined forces with to become a musical trio.

For ten years the trio refined their chops at the Mossop household and the beautiful Lemon Tree Bay, before ultimately making the move to Melbourne.

But, not before recruiting Dan Chisholm (drums) a rookie corporate lawyer staring down the barrel of a life-long commitment to limited liability and hostile takeovers – music was more his thing.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, with not a penny to their name, they snagged the last ever legal busking license for a full-piece band and took to the streets.

Two years later BONJAH have sold well over 14,000 CDs (self produced), played over 450 shows including seven national tours.

Remarkably, BONJAH have always lived exclusively off their music and continue to satisfy fans by playing at charity events and working with children as role models.

Last year the four members of BONJAH became five upon hearing the talent of percussionist James Majernik, who instantly fell in love with BONJAH’s distinctive sound.

BONJAH are set to rock The Sunshine Coast throughout early January with songs from their new album including their hit ‘Bring Back the Fire’.

Their next show in SE QLD will be at The Riverstage in Brisbane as the only local contingent of the all-star international line-up for the national Raggamuffin tour in January.
