Falls Creek accommodation - Victorian Ski Fields
(Thursday, 28 January 2010) Written by Bob Willman
The Victorian skiing and snowboarding season is just around the corner. Winter sports are expected to show a huge rise in popularity this year with the Vancouver Winter games dominating TV ratings in February. Most Australian operators are of the opinion that the comprehensive coverage will mean lots of new visitors wanting to learn all the skills the have been seeing on TV. All this publicity combined with the improvement in world economies should mean lots of visitors to the Victorian ski fields in 2010. The GFC has meant that there will be little or no new Snow accommodation at the major resorts and if the predicted increase in numbers is correct, then existing accommodation will be booked out early. Book as early as possible is the message for 2010.

Falls Creek accommodation operators have indicated that there is plenty of early interest in the peak months from the opening weekend on the 12th of June, right through until October. Mt Hotham accommodation providers are likewise predicting a bumper season judging by early enquiries. The Queens Birthday long weekend is the traditional start of the ski season in Victoria. Mt Buller operators say they are currently checking and rechecking equipment like ski lifts, snow cannons and snow ploughs to ensure they are trouble free during the season. All resorts have ordered substantial amounts of new ski hire gear to cope with the expected influx of tourists. The resorts have also planned out a great entertainment itinerary for the season and there will be lots of competitions for advanced skiers as well as novelty and fun events for the adventurous or novice skiers.

The Victorian Ski Fields are among the best in the world with fantastic slopes and facilities set among a landscape that is totally different from anywhere else in the world. The magnificent snow gums and fantastic wild life make an Australian skiing experience totally unique. The whole snowy mountains alpine region is very easy to access from Victoria’s capital city of Melbourne. Snow bus services depart daily for all major resorts or you can fly direct to Mt Hotham with Qantaslink or into Albury and hire a vehicle. Snow chains will be required if driving yourself. This is one of Australia’s most scenic regions so take your time and remember to bring your camera.
