SHANNON BARNETT QUARTET - 'COUNTRY'
Virtuoso trombonist Shannon Barnett and her dynamic quartet are touring Australia to present their debut album ‘Country’, out on the Grigoryan brothers’ ‘WhichWay Music’ label. Awarded ‘Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year’ (2007), Barnett is well-known for her work with Barney McAll, Kurt Rosenwinkel, The Bamboos, Paul Grabowsky and for a recent stint performing (sometimes upside down) with Circus Oz.
Expertly recorded by Robin Gray at Allan Eaton Studio and mixed and mastered by Philip Rex, ‘Country’ captures Barnett’s cheekiness and energetic approach to the trombone, through a variety of engaging compositions, with input from all members of the ensemble.
From the alt-country/pop-tinged title track ‘Country’, to the distinctly north coast-flavoured Abercrombie Byron Hippie Knife Fight and the catchy dub groove of ‘Pesos’, the album is a journey through many stylistic influences, all the while retaining a strong and defined ensemble sound.
Catch them on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th October at Jazzworx, 10 Exhibition St Bowen Hills. 7.30pm $15
1. Written by michael webb, on 09-10-2010 16:55 i just bought this album - extremely musical and tasteful. i have for a few years enjoyed shannon barnett's playing - phrasing, attack, lines and ideas - so musical, fluid, humorous/serious-poignant. it sounds like to me so far this album is being underrated in the few reviews i have read. there is a depth here. and the ensemble is sounding like something different to what we have heard so far in australia (and elsemwhere for that matter). i've heard christopher hale's playing with josh roseman, whcih is lovely, but this sound is fresh and vital, and inspiring. thanks for excellent new australian music. |
