Comedy for Conservation in Costa Rica

| QUT business student Alana Helbig will take on summer school with a difference when she heads to Costa Rica in January. The 28-year-old will join International Student Volunteers for two weeks to help research teams collect critical scientific data for conservation projects in the Central American country. Ms Helbig, from Paddington, could be involved in schemes designed to save sea turtles, spider monkeys, toucans or native vegetation. “It could be anything from reforestation to monitoring dolphin and frog populations to moving turtle eggs so they’re in safer position,” she said. The second-year student, who juggles a management and public relations double major with full-time work as a business consultant, also stands to gain academic credit for her efforts. “I just felt I'd been very fortunate in my life and up until now I hadn't given anything back - it was time for me to do that,” she said. “We will be living with host families so we will be fully immersed in the Costa Rican culture. “I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how as humans we affect the environment that we live in but also how we can make a difference because I’ve never done volunteer work before.” Ms Helbig hopes to attract 300 people to a fundraising comedy night she has organised in conjunction with The Comedy Empire and her friends and travel partners Jono Hills and Lolly Cornish. The trio aim to raise $10,000 at the event, which will feature Australian comedian of the year Chris Wainhouse plus Rob Browns and Nick Johns. The comedy night starts at 8pm on October 1 at the Broncos Leagues Club, 98 Fulcher Rd, Red Hill and will feature raffles and door prizes.
