nightillion lends support (to anyone comin to the corner)
(Tuesday, 01 May 2007) Written by Krissi Weiss

After returning to the shores from playing on the “Girls got the Blues” bluesfest in Manchester  and a string of gigs in the UK, Perth roots pioneer Toby, will be doing a small east coast tour, talking in mainly Northern NSW and Queensland with a few dates in Victoria before she heads off again to Canada. She has been kind enough to invite the kids of nightillion along for the ride with the trio providing support at her shows @ Barsoma June 28th, Upfront club Maleny, June 30th and the Tongue and Groove, West End July 4th.

Toby’s bio and press clippings.

"Toby" can range from Toby being solo, up to fourteen players at once. Toby has carefully selected her musicians, and only plays with the best. Showcasing strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, harmonica, drums, bass and guitar.

Toby was accompanied by twelve of WA’s top musicians, most of whom share the stage with her on a regular basis. Special guests included Dave Mann from the Dave Mann Collective, who sang stunning harmonies on “Goodbye Baby”. Mo Wilson from Mo Wilson and The Drivers joined Toby on keys and backing vocals. He had also played with Carus and The True Believers for years, before forming his own band. Maera Paki also joined Toby with powerful, beautiful backing vocals on several tracks.

Toby is known for playing a wide range of musical stylings, with a fine mixture of musos. With her solid band of Pete Gellin on bass guitar, and Elliot Bruse on drums, they invited along to record with them Jessica Gethin (violin), Penelope Kimble (flute), Lucas VanBerkel (sax), David Rastrick (flugel, trumpet), Fiona Simms (violin, vocals), Sarah Peirce (cello) and last but definitely not least their most regular solist Jean-Guy Lemire on harmonica.

"Beard is amazing. She has an energy on stage that captures the crowd. Beard is a brilliant songwriter, soulful musician and has a lot of spunk and it is a joyful experience to watch her on stage.”
Sarah Jane Tasker – Kalgoorlie Miner, 24th June, 2005

"Toby, well, she went off. Firey and energetic with a very powerful voice, almost aggressive in fact, and she could hold a note! I wanted to yell out, "you go girl!"

“Although she's only in her mid 20s, Toby Beard sounds like a roots veteran, her slightly husky but powerful voice delivering feelgood, swingout sounds with real depths of emotion." Julie Hosking, Editor of Scoop Magazine, Winter 2006
