| Foco Nuevo Turns Two
Foco Nuevo, the folk club run by Sue Monk and Lachlan Hurse from Jumping Fences will celebrate two years of alternative folk at a celebration concert on March 5.
Sue and Lachlan set up Foco Nuevo after returning from Cuba in early 2008, where they were invited to play in several intimate performance venues run by musicians themselves. Sue and Lachlan adapted the format to Foco Nuevo, which features regular performances by their group Jumping Fences along with invited guest artists. Over the two years they have hosted than 40 guest acts which have revealed a surprising diversity in Brisbane's acoustic music scene.
'We set up Foco Nuevo as an experiment, and have been very happy with the results. We couldn't have anticipated the tremendous support from artists and audiences alike, and it shows that music outside the commercial sphere can sustain sizeable audiences.' said Sue. 'We weren't sure how it would turn out, but are really pleased to have reached our second birthday.' she added.
The celebration will include guest musicians Rose Wintergreen-Arthur, a quirky singer/songwriter with great tunes, and Steve Tyson, who has toured Europe and the US with his band Rough Red and twentysevens'
After running for 18 months in Ahimsa House, Foco Nuevo is now located in Souths Leagues Club at Davies Park in West End. As well as being a licensed venue, tea, coffee and Maggies delicious cakes are on sale.
