BRISBANE’S ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE TURNS THE BIG 21
(Wednesday, 03 March 2010) Written by Courtney Lock

The land of limericks, leprechauns and Guinness will descend on Brisbane on Saturday 13 March as thousands celebrate the 21st anniversary of the city's famous St Patrick's Day Parade.

Queensland Irish Association President Eamon Gaffney said the luck of the Irish had blessed the parade over the years for it to reach its 21st birthday.

“The original parade stopped during World War II and was only resurrected in 1989,” Mr Gaffney said.
“With almost half of Queensland’s population claiming Irish heritage, it’s no wonder the parade is one of the state’s most popular events.
“This year’s event begins at 10.30am and is expected to draw a crowd of more than 30,000 to watch an estimated 600 marchers proudly display their Gaelic pride.
“Around 40 colourful displays including traditional Irish dancers and the award-winning Queensland Irish Association Pipe Band will showcase the Emerald’s Isle’s contribution to the state.”
Mr Gaffney said a traditional Irish Faire with plenty of food and free entertainment would continue outside Parliament House and QUT until 2pm.
“The Parade has provided many Queenslanders with wonderful memories over the past 21 years, including couples finding love and families returning year after year for the festive atmosphere.
“There is something for everyone at the parade whether you’re Irish or just want to experience the delicious food and riveting entertainment of another culture,” he said.
“It’s always a guaranteed fun family day out with the traditional Irish ‘Craic’, or good times, continuing into the evening for dedicated fans.
“Irish culture has been a major influence in the development of Queensland and the parade is a way of celebrating the Irish contribution to the Australian way of life.”
The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will kick off at 10:30am from the corner of Elizabeth and George streets proceeding down Elizabeth Street, Edward Street and Alice Street. It will finish in George Street outside Parliament House and QUT and will be followed by an Irish Faire with plenty of food and free family entertainment until 2pm.
Motorists can expect road closures from 10:15am up until midday. Retailers are urged to consider these delays and plan alternative routes to work if necessary.
