With our ongoing announcements of great musicians slated to play our birthday party on Friday Jul 15, we thought putting together a collective was a good idea – so we have created a little something called The Brisband Experience. It’s a cavalcade of Brisbane musicians performing some of the city’s musical hits, featuring two drummers in Steve Pope (Kate Miller-Heidke, Transport) and Tony Garrett (The Boat People), Ben Dalton (Hungry Kids of Hungary) on bass, dual guitarists Thomas Murphy (The Bloodpoets) and Caleb James (Rhubarb), while vocal duties fall on the girl-boy harmonies of Katie Noonan (pictured, George, Elixir) and Dan James (Drawn From Bees). There will of course be ‘friends’ joining in on the night, but we really can’t say who – it will spoil the surprise! Taking a look back to the ‘90s one can’t help but feel a few warm fuzzies for Dave McCormack’s various projects. Stemming from his post-Custard days is Dave McCormack & The Polaroids (pictured) – and the band have graciously accepted an invitation to play at our Thousand In Twenty (1000 issues/20 years) party. The Polaroids (Seja, Dylan and Norto) will join Dave on Friday Jul 15 at The Zoo, playing with young bucks Inland Sea and Velociraptor.

Rave first interviewed a young David McCormack of Custard, in Issue #2 October 16, 1991, when every question asked he related his answer to food, sex or Madonna. Custard were about to re-record Rockfish Anna for the Youngbloods III compilation, and their video for C Is For Cookie was about to debut on Rage … really, has much changed?

Band number two up for partying with us at The Zoo on Friday Jul 15 is the mini-legion of pop lovelies, Inland Sea (pictured). All 10 of them! First on our radar in March last year after a local show and lounge-room recorded demo of All Fall Down piqued our interest, the collective were also our ‘sponsor band’ for Sunset Sounds, were kind enough to carol with us at the Rave Christmas Party and have release a damn fine EP in Traitor. We’re eagerly awaiting their full-length and are even more excited to hear those harmonies croon Happy Birthday. Inland Sea join the previously announced Velociraptor! As you may know, Rave turns 20 this year! To celebrate 1000 issues in 20 years we’re having a party, appropriately titled Thousand In Twenty – and the first band helping us blow out the candles? Surf-pop via indie-rock behemoth Velociraptor (pictured). Harnessing 11 in their number (there may be more by now) Velociraptor have been bringing their free-wheeling good time racket to stages across Brisbane for a while now (you may have caught them at No Years and Stature::Statue’s last show at The Zoo). The collective will be bringing some “Gidget zombie beach party” vibes to celebrate our 20th at The Zoo on Friday Jul 15.
