Like Sand...

By Like Sand... Performance Troupe

 25 July at 7.30 pm
26 & 27 July at 2 pm and 7.30 pm

Like Sand... blurs the boundaries of orthodox performance making by hybridising many traditional forms including spoken verse, dance, physical theatre and percussive music, in addition to art installation to create a simple piece of live art and will be performed at Metro Arts from 25 July as part of BF08 under the radar.
The performers scatter sand on the stage and shuffle on it with individual articulations to produce a collective rhythm while they simultaneously perform Gil Scott Heron’s poem “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” and thier own contemporary Australian text.  Like Sand… creates a provocative dichotomy between saccharine pop culture references and serious research into human history that speaks to the audience at a core human level.
Like Sand… originally premiered as part of QUT’s Production One 2007 season, which showcased the work of first year Performance Studies students. Like Sand… was so well received that original assistant directors Frankie Jaiyeola and Robyn Shenfield decided to take the work  beyond a university context and to showcase it within a major arts festival:  BF08 under the radar.
“The process of creating Like Sand... touched everyone who collaborated on it originally,” said Frankie Jaiyeola, one of Like Sand...’s facilitators.
“We’re so excited to have the opportunity to perform it again to a new audience, and it will be a great experience to be billed with Debra Batton from Legs on the Wall!”
BF08 under the radar is a celebration of artists on the way up! A showcase of adventurous, anarchic and vital new theatre work, BF08 under the radar is an initiative of Brisbane Festival 2008 and Australia’s only theatre-focussed fringe event.
Over 16 days, BF08 under the radar will play host to over 130 pieces of amazing and innovative theatre from 26 independent theatre companies from across Australia and the world.
This mini festival, to be held at Metro Arts in the Brisbane city centre, will be jam-packed with a revolving plethora of physical, visual and contemporary performance. Captivating, incongruous and thought provoking, BF08 under the radar will amuse, challenge and possibly even revolt you.
