As the Sister Rock roadshow hits the Step Inn, travelling minstrels Even, The Spazzys and Tracy Redhead also invite locals Little Vegas And The Fuzz Parade to get nice ‘n rowdy. The group, ranging in age from 17 to 28, are particularly noticeable for the shimmying, tambourine-toting stage presence and enormous voice of frontwoman Sabrina Lawrie (formerly of Tongue), who leads the group through a bluesy garage punk party of a set. Marvellous.
Perth’s Tracy Redhead is next, the aptly-named performer impressively singing and strumming through a selection of tunes from excellent new album Walking Home A Different Way. Tracy and band provide a well-considered combination of breezy folk-pop, washes of synth and a healthy dose of rock muscle, reaching something like catharsis in the chugging darkness of Crossroads.
Everyone’s favourite punk pop Ramones worshippers The Spazzys follow. And even though the hyperactive power chords of Sunshine Drive are clearly inspired by the work of Johnny, Dee Dee and gang, Kat, Ally and Lucy’s three-part harmonies give the songs an even more classic, bubblegum feel. With Ally in wisecracking mode behind the kit, the trio blend the old and the new with humour and heart.
Finally, Ashley Naylor leads his power pop trio Even through an hour of Beatle-esque melodicism and scorching R&B riffs. Naylor apologises for his rustiness playing the guitar which he wrote Black Umbrella on, but it sounds perfect to these ears, as the man effortlessly divebombs from Byrdian jangle to psych-blues soloing. Meanwhile, bassist Wally Kempton adds tasty vocal harmonies, allowing the likes of I Am The Light to soar. The group’s amiable yet punchy performance goes down a treat with the Friday night punters, many of whom are sufficiently psyched to follow this set with the glam metal theme night upstairs. Bad Medicine is what they need….
