(Shock)
Ornate, glittery, classy, bright and light – that’s chandeliers for you.
The Boat People have finally gotten around to their long-awaited second album and, to put it succinctly, it’s another impressive effort from this highly regarded Brisbane band. With Machine Translations’ J Walker at the production helm, they’ve managed to deliver 11 inviting but inventive pop songs that somehow sound simultaneously so carefully crafted and yet so carefree. From the charmingly off-kilter immediacy of opener and first single Awkward Orchard Orchid to the considered, evolving mood of Millagri (the closer and the longest track here), they sound both playful and thoughtful, making those otherwise divergent aspects come together so easily. From the soaring, jangly pop of On Your Side (which neatly names Highgate Hill) and the spangly guitar bits of Born In The ‘80s to the more wistful, understated tones of Hours N Hours, the suppleness and subtlety of these poised tracks come with more than enough melodic uplift to keep things bright and upbeat. That’s how a song called Panic can sound so amiable and infectious. So, let’s cut to the chase, is this a great album from The Boaties? Yesyesyesyesyes!
