“A good sound system, a great groove and the right crowd” – these are the three essential ingredients for the perfect party according to MICKY SLIM. And come mid-July, the UK DJ/producer extraordinaire will bring nothing less than just that when he unleashes his new single across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. NINA BERTOK reports.
“With the Australian scene, I think it is really quite similar to the kind of style that you also find in the UK,” Slim enthuses.
“From what I have gathered so far, it’s the kind of place where the sort of stuff I play tends to go down really well. But that’s not just coming from a perspective of me as a DJ, it’s also coming from the point of view of another person.”
Indeed, as far as Slim is concerned, it’s all about the shiny, happy people.
“Oh, it all comes down the people, definitely,” he confirms. “For a really fantastic gig or a party you really need to have the right kind of crowd. A happy crowd. It’s absolutely essential to have a bunch of like-minded people enjoying themselves and really taking in the music. I really don’t like people that are there just to look good, I like people to be there for the music and, as corny as it sounds, just to party hard. Australia also seems very British in its culture so I am confident the new single will go down nicely.”
Also featuring the owner of respected house imprint Cr2 Records, Mark Brown, the single You Know What’s Up sees a unique but sonically successful collaboration from a very unlikely pair for the Ministry Of Sound’s Clubbers Guide To Spring.
Who would’a thunk it?
“I know!” Slim chuckles. “Look, I’ve been mates with Mark for six years now so it’s really been a natural progression to end up working together.”
And despite some opinions, the move has by no means been a strategic one, Slim insists.
“I would love for my name to be like his, for sure. I love what he does, but there has been absolutely no ulterior motive behind collaborating with him at all. I just love and respect what he does and he is just a good person to get involved with on any level, professionally or as a friend. I’m just over the moon that we have had a chance to do a track together for this compilation.”
Giving the all-time classic Jungle Brothers’ 1988 track I’ll House You a bit of a make-over, You Know What’s Up features Slim’s bass-in-yer-face edit as well as Brown’s housey, more groove-orientated take. The resulting sonic collision is a catchy and jackin’ electro house record that will leave barely an ass across Aussie clubs motionless.
“We’ve taken the Jungle Brother’s vocal and basically tried to bring the song back to life a bit. I think the track just works really well overall.”
And being a jack of all trades, Slim should know. Following the success of his 2007 remix of House Of Pain’s booty-shakin’ classic Jump Around, Slim not only landed himself a Godskitchen global residency – “The highlight of my entire career” – but also assumed production duties and launched his own label Bomb Squad Records.
“Yes, I’m still doing all of that and more,” he announces. “I’ve still got my label and I’m still signing people to it. I’m always on the lookout for a good track, it could be anything really, but if it’s got a natural groove then that’s what I look for. Uniqueness and versatility comes into it quite a bit too, I think you should always strive to come up with a track that will still sound relevant and amazing decades on down the road.”
MICKY SLIM plays Wonderland at The Met in Brisbane on Friday July 18 and Platinum on the Gold Coast, Saturday July 19 – both shows with Mark Brown (M.Y.N.C. Project).
