Brisbane's creative community will be out in force this Thursday to witness the cities most talented designers battle it out in the finale of the inaugural next byte DESIGNER FIGHT CLUB. Held in conjunction with the Brisbane Advertising and Design Club (BAD) and Next Byte, Designer Fight Club showcases the skills of Brisbane’s junior designers, art directors and advertising agencies. SUSAN MILANOVIC brings us up to speed.
In it's first year, Designer Fight Club takes place over two nights. The first of which, held last month, invited students from colleges around Brisbane to pit their talents against their peers. Contestants were given twenty-five minutes to respond to briefs, some of which included a CD cover, street press magazine and an adult nightclub website design. Using a set resource of stock photography, vector art, textures and font, contestants created their piece to the encouragement (and heckling) of the crowd.
The winner of the student event was Tim Lovett of QUT - who took home swag of cool prizes and wild card entry into Thursday’s agency battle.
Davros of Bigfish, says the event is beneficial for the Brisbane Design Community. "It plays on the rivalry between colleges and studios/agencies, but in an entertaining and light hearted way, he explains. “The BAD awards (Brisbane Advertising and Design Awards held annually) is always a great time to see which studios and creatives are producing the best work, but next byte Designer Fight Club allows the junior designers and finished artists who may not get a mention in a big advertising campaign to flex their skills and stomp some heads on their own."
The event also creates an environment for people not in the industry to check out the excellent work of professionals, in a relaxed and entertaining setting.
Judges for the event include Hannah Cutts (Cutts Creative), Justin Overall and Sheldon Lieberman (Bigfish). As Davros says, "The judges were chosen on their reputation within the industry as producers of high quality design and conceptual work. We sought judges who were respected by industry peers and professionals and who would be able to critically assess the contestants responses and not be afraid to hold back and be a bit controversial in their decisions. We also selected judges who could bring some left field creativity to the table and an unconventional approach to the process."
The pro Designer Fight Club has entrants from Junior Advertising, BCM, ION Design, Colour Chiefs, Eprique and THQ Studio, who will be in the running for the major prize of a 20inch Apple iMac computer and, of course, acclamation from their peers.
The BAD Club is a volunteer organisation that promotes creativity in design and advertising in Brisbane. Competitions such as Designer fight club and other BAD events benefit charity, so be sure to head along too The Zoo Thursday night for some entertainment, sweet tunes and refreshments. If that alone wasn't enough incentive, a range of door prizes will be on offer from local businesses including Urban Grind, Lychee Lounge, Butter Beats, Rocking Horse Records, Kill the Music and www.Bigfish.tv
