The Jubilee - Sat Jul 12
Opening tonight’s punk rock variety evening is the revised and refined Provoke, who scream through the early evening lethargy to instant effect. Three piece all girl outfit The Pretty Boys are frocked up to rock and the audience responds accordingly. Their up-tempo rock & roll progresses to all out chic-pitch punk, and with the mohawks at the front bouncing heartily, they justify their growing 4ZZZ buzz.
Needing no introduction, Rollo and his band of brass wielding ska bandits Blowhard remind us they’re still Broke before covering The Specials classic Too Much Too Young. Ben’s tuba-led congaline stokes the lively vibe before V8 Rock ‘n Roll, Sexual Deviate and Fuck the Dance Clubs round out their gazillionth stellar set.
Given that theEurope-bound hardcore heavyweights Mouthguard are tonight’s featured attraction, their early appearance is a tad confusing. Promisingly, their fresh One More Round EP material stands out with She Is AHooligan and Eye For An Eye thrashing nicely, before ending with what might now be considered their penultimate drinking anthem Drink All Night.
Toowoomba’s Jack Flash pack a significant political punch with their carefully orchestrated celt-punk, and with songs such as Shearers Strike and A Convict Tale, they could prove to be Queensland’s answer to Melbourne’s rebellious Mutiny. The high octane, sweat inducing two-step of Brisbane’s premier psychobilly outfit The Bad Moon Company sets off another writhing floor from the opening flyer Walk On. Crooning through Say My Name, temperatures rise and tempers fray as the band step in to stifle a touch of fiery aggro.
A long and boozy evening culminates in calamity with the ever-incendiary Jobson’s Dreamkillers stoking analready smouldering audience with the fiery fury of Homophobia and a particularly blistering version of their self-titled track Dreamkillers. Audience participation erupts violently during Wattage before the stage lights swing and the ceiling crashes down. With security spooked, the plug is pulled and another Dreamkillers set ends in chaos.
