All beasts have their soft underbelly, and HOUSE VS HURRICANE prove this notion. Vocalist CHRIS DICKER chats to LINDSEY CUTHBERTSON about how screams, breakdowns and dance beats can be meshed into a beautiful mess.
When you’re in a band with a name that oozes menace and a vocalist who spends the morning of an interview getting tattooed, it gives the image of a band hoping to raise the hackles of society. Thankfully, for a group that sits within a genre of music that is already flooded with copycats, Melbourne-based, synthesizer-tinged metalcore sextet House Vs Hurricane have the musical muscle to flex behind the vitriolic vision they present to the public.
Their debut EP, Forfeiture (which has also been released in Japan), is a stunning example of the talent that the Australian hardcore music scene is capable of producing. Full of raging vocals and livid lyrics, a chugging rhythm section and capricious melodies, it is a snapshot of a band on the tip of an iceberg. Endorsed by international clothing company Atticus and currently writing their debut album, they are also embarking on an east coast tour with contemporaries Mourning Tide over the coming weeks.
“Even though we play a style and a genre that has been overdone, it just basically comes down to if the music is listenable and there’s talent there”, Chris Dicker answers articulately on the subject of getting noticed within the hardcore scenes of Australia.
“For us, playing live is all about fun and having a good time. If you are the audience, expect a lot of energy from us. We just want people to come and not be afraid to have fun.”
The band, consisting of Dicker, guitarists Chris Shaw and Ryan McLerie, bassist/vocalist Adam Myers, drummer Liam Disher, and synth operator Joey Frangione, formed in late 2006 and have been carving a niche up in hardcore scenes from Brisbane to Adelaide.
What sets House Vs Hurricane apart from their colleagues is the use of synthesizers, ambient sounds and electro elements into their music, as well as composing songs that are structurally unique.
Says Dicker on the vast influences behind the band’s musical palette: “A lot of what we listen to isn’t heavy music. Both guitarists listen to bands like Circa Survive, Minus The Bear and Sigur Rós, which is where a lot of the ambience in our sound comes from.”
The band is extremely excited for the upcoming tour, according to Dicker. They have only played with Mourning Tide once before and unfortunately it wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences.
“We played with them at Toowoomba and there was this huge power surge while we were setting up,” he sighs. “It blew up our synth player’s keyboard.”
On the horizon, House Vs Hurricane have the perfect opportunity to make amends and be the power surge themselves. With an armory of colossal tracks and a livewire show to boot, things can only come together more for the Melbourne lads. Will their house withstand the cutthroat music industry hurricane? Go see for yourselves.
Go pick up a copy of HOUSE VS HURRICANE’s debut EP FORFEITURE when they play Snitch @ Rosie’s with Mourning Tide on Thursday July 31.
