On your website you claim your band’s influences lie in the likes of The Cure and The Beatles. Who would you compare yourselves to on a more modern scale?
I would say the first alum by Faker would resemble us quite a bit. Really darkish brit-pop. Though we do have many elements of bright happy wank pop … ala Ben Lee ... with distortion.
You’ve appeared with bands such as The Whitlams, The Waifs and Jebediah, and also many overseas acts. Have they given you any memorable advice or souvenirs?
Souvenirs is hard to say… I stole Tim Freedman’s wine after his show and got hammered with my friends back at our room… I wonder if he missed it? 1990s gave me good advice regarding not singing after sleeping – you get a croaky voice. Doc Neeson told me not to give a shit about the industry. That made me laugh!
Do you have any obsessive fans that you know of?
I want that girl from Flight Of The Conchords … Mel. I want her to be a fan. But nope, not crazed obsessive fans. But we have a bit of a diehard fan in Taiwan, which is odd. I wouldn’t say aspiring to having a crazed fans is important, I am just hoping to make an influence on the way people see and feel. If they respond then that’s an achievement.
Finally, tell us why we should listen to your music?
I’m pretty opinionated about the industry of late. I don’t really support genre-specific music. We are heavily diverse … we don’t try to sound like a new version of an old band. Hopefully the new album will generate more support for us so we can continue to be totally scattered rather than forced into the industry cookie cutter!
THE BLOODPOETS provide support at Small Mercies’ official release show for album Beautiful Hum at Rosie’s on Friday July 25.
