ImageIN FLAGRANTI is the Swiss born SASHA CRNOBRNJA and his American studio partner ALEX GLOOR. The two met in 1989 when Alex was in a store looking for some of the records that he heard on a mix-tape from Italy. “Then one day he was asking this guy I also knew that worked in a record shop and I happened to walk in the shop at the same time,” explains Sasha. An unlikely story indeed, but for nearly 20 years, the duo have managed to fuse all manner of music from funk to trashy disco into a congruent whole, that defies explanation. REZO KEZERASHVILI reports.

Rezo Kezerashvili: So your music is a fusion of many things – describe it for those that haven’t heard it before.

Sasha Crnobrnja: In true Flagranti form, it’s an irreverent balance of sex, dirt, distortion, dance, beauty and tongue-in-cheek humour, all wrapped up in a gritty, ‘70s aesthetic!

RK: The detail is in the art right down to the cover design for you guys isn’t it? Tell us why that is important?

SC: The record covers were always important to us. The reason for it is because it gives the music a face and it can emphasize a certain vibe that you want to communicate - it’s an audio visual experience that the crowd needs to be able to submerse itself in.

RK: Tell us about your Codek label – what is the philosophy there?

SC: No one tells us what to do and that gives us great freedom to express ourselves. We do what we like and not what the industry demands. It gives us the opportunity to be a little self-indulgent but also to do things that we might not be able to do anywhere else.

RK: And what have you been up to in the studio? Any plans for another artist album soon?

SC: There is a second full length album in the pipeline, which should be coming out in November. There will also be some more 12” releases and remixes for Gomma and DFA/Rong music.

RK: Tell us about the logistics of your performances – do you play together or only one of you?

SC: Usually I am the one playing out, mostly as a DJ but I also do a live PA, sometimes with a singer. If there is a good budget both Alex and I play together, but the problem with that is that Alex is not so into travelling!

RK: Where do you draw your influences and inspirations?

SC: We are both very much influenced by the aesthetics of the ‘60s and ‘70s. As for inspirations, it can be anything - even a good meal or a walk in the park can be inspiring we find.

RK: Finally, tell us about what we can expect from your Australian tour?

SC: There will be a mix of vintage dance music including disco, rock, funk and cosmic – a lot of our material is mostly our own edits and revisions with a blend of more contemporary electronic music. There will also be some fresh stuff that I have recently received from fellow DJs and producers that I’m into.

IN FLAGRANTI play BarSoma Saturday Jul 26.
