The Zoo - Sat Jul 19

If you had asked me a year ago if The Getaway Plan could sell out and 18+ show at The Zoo then I would have told you in the nicest possible way to go screw yourself. But tonight the The Zoo is sold out and The Getaway Plan are onto something special if this crowd is anything to go by.

First up is Melbourne’s Closure In Moscow – these guys have just signed a deal with a US label and are heading there very soon. Closure are like a version of The Mars Volta that is just a little more easier to understand. No Volta jam sessions, just frantic punk/indie/prog rock played with a great deal of emotion, the Getaway Plan singer even helping with the vocal duties on a track.

All I keep thinking is ‘I would hate to playing after these guys’. New Zealand’s Goodnight Nurse are up next, playing rock with a pop twist – these guys have just released a brand spanking new album and with so many people singing along, obviously there has been a bit of downloading going on.

Everyone is clearly here tonight for The Getaway Plan, and the response when they take the stage is a very warm one from the sold-out Zoo crowd. The boys’ debut album Where The City Meets The Sea is obviously featured heavily and the title track and single arouses one hell of a sing-along. What next for these four lads from Melbourne? No matter what happens, Australia has a new rock band to be bloody proud of.
