  • On Friday Aug 15, Brisbane’s self-proclaimed ‘prince of retro’ Kristian Fletcher is hosting a Madonna 50th Birthday party at the Globe. There’ll be a screening of Desperately Seeking Susan at 7pm, with Kristian playing Madonna hits all night from 9pm.
  • Saturday night club Thriller at Rosie’s has developed a reputation for incendiary live shows in the downstairs room, but Saturday Aug 16 is set to provide something a little different with the upstairs Common People indie room going live for the first time. Local twee popsters Little Scout will be launching their new CD with support from Fun At Sea (Rialto Decibel Choir duo), psych-rockers Idle Cranes, and the Guilty Pleasures DJs (Monster Joe’s). Doors at 9pm, with $10 entry for the whole club.
  • Students who witnessed the Boost Mobile Rock The Schools tour when it swept through Queensland should tune into Channel Nine on Saturday Aug 16 at 12pm, when they can catch a half-hour documentary the experiences of Sydney act Amy Meredith.
  • Independent journal/zine The Lifted Brow is launching its third issue in Brisbane on Saturday Aug 16 at The Troubadour, featuring performances from Joel Saunders, Blue Carousel, Monster Monster, and The Estates. Entry is $12, which includes a copy of the magazine.
  • Magic Dirt have announced a few more support acts for their No Sleep Til Christmas tour: playing with the ‘Dirt will be The Sea Shall Not Have Them at the Coolangatta Hotel on Aug 22, and The Pretty Boys and The Thoroughbreds at The Zoo on Aug 23.
  • On Saturday Aug 23 musician Mark Lowndes and bands Psalmist & The Lyre, LeBelle and The LS Philosophy will take part in the annual Live For Life gig at Griffith University Gold Coast Campus. As always, the event raises much-needed funds for medical students in Indonesia. Doors at 7pm, with proceeds from the $10 entry fee going to a good cause.
  • Folktronic-hip hop-leftfield wunderkinds Underlapper (SYD) are set to play a couple of anticipated shows in Brisbane, visiting the Valley Studios Sep 5 (with The Rational Academy and Mr Maps) and The Hangar Sep 6 (supports TBA). Prepare with a visit to www.myspace.com/underlapper.
