- The RagTag Revue’s Cheesy ‘50s Beach Party Luau takes place at the Fringe Bar Tuesday-Wednesday this week, with burlesque, cabaret and circus entertainment from 8pm each night. Proceeds from admission go to Surf Life Saving QLD.
- This Friday’s GoMA Up Late features the intriguing combination of locals Mardi Lumsden & The Rising Seas alongside Melbourne-based ‘french pop’ outfit Houlette. Mmm, stylish fun.
- Uber in West End hosts the Brisbane Dancehall Queen Contest 2008 this Friday, inviting female dancers to compete showing off their best afro-caribbean styles. The winner will proceed to the Sydney finals in November. Music for the night comes courtesy of the ably equipped Rhythm Collision Sound System, Ras George (Zimbabwe), and Surgeon General Sound (K-Note & Nick Toth from Sydney). Doors at 9pm and free entry all night.
- Brigitte Jean Allen of local atmos-pop act The Kindness Of Strangers is part of a new art exhibition being held at Percolator Gallery in Paddington. In Between The Calm features work by Allen, Louise Visser, Claire Monghan, Russel Solomon, and Thailand’s Chumpol Taksapornchai and Sutin Pontaptin. The opening night this Friday also features music from Sam Simon, plus Allen and Alice Jones of TKOS from 6pm.
- Back for its fourth year, the Rumble Dance Competition hits Suncorp Piazza on Saturday. Dancers will rumble it out over a variety of categories, including hip hop, popping & locking, 3-on-3 breaking, krumping and three-style. Hosted by beatboxer Dr. Rhythm, judging will be guests Nacho Pop and Rhiannon from So You Think You Can Dance. Finals start at 5pm.
- The Kawana Blues Rent Party fundraiser for the 2008 Sunshine Coast Blues Festival takes place this Saturday at the Kawana Community Hall, featuring performances from Hat Fitz, JV & The Blue Rhythm Kings, The Big Easy and Blonde On Blue. - Iconic Brisbane act Last Nites Tea will play their free annual once-only gig at the Pineapple Hotel on the Ekka Holiday eve, Tuesday Aug 12, supported by Pineapples From The Dawn Of Time. Featuring members of Toxic Garden Gnomes, The Crystal Set and Adelaide’s The Kamikazees, it’s a nostalgia-feast for the local alternative set.
