Fine singer, unfortunate lyricist.
Weston has a good voice, there’s a sort of soothing texture to it. Sort of like Neil Diamond. The songs are competent enough, lingering in the arena of simple rock ballads. Singer-songwriter seems an incorrect description for Weston because it feels very much like a band record. Where this record truly crashes and burns are the lyrics. To go through and name the lyrical gems would be a lengthy but ultimately futile exercise. Generally Weston’s message is ultra-positive but unfortunately also a laughable foray into cliché. Unless you’re a purveyor of Christian rock or you’re singing for children you simply can’t get away with lines about believing in yourself, pouring yourself a cup of life, living like there’s no tomorrow, never giving in etc etc. To top it off is an adequate but unnecessary cover of Waltzing Matilda, but after enduring so many messages of self-belief I found it difficult to care, though my apathy was buffered by a subconscious increase in self-esteem.
