Alhambra - Thu Aug 14
Thursday August 14 is a sad day in Brisbane club history. WolfGang, a night for the kids, by the kids, is happening for the last time.
Two familiar acts are on tonight’s bill, Stature::Statue and Brisbane favourites Teenagersintokyo. The cavernous Alhambra Lounge is packed to the hilt as Stature::Statue clamber onstage to kick off the proceedings with their blend of abrasive and energetic pysch-punk.
Their sound is something of a sonic mix between the Mars Volta and spaz-punks, the Blood Brothers. In saying this, they tend to wear the influences too proudly on their sleeves with the structure and execution of songs. There certainly are moments of brilliance (especially with the brash but infectious Embassy Of Wolves) but they need to find their true sound to be taken more seriously as an original outfit.
The mood gives a sudden u-turn from the noise and excitement of Stature::Statue to the darkly percussive introduction of Teenagersintokyo, tonight’s headliners and the last official act to play at WolfGang. I don’t think the WolfGang’ers could have asked for better representation than how TiT entered the room: horror masks worn proudly for a fitting downfall.
The grrrls (and boy) move flawlessly through sparse drones and goth-ish overtones to dance floor stompers like Very Vampyr. The stylish patrons lap up every yelp and jolt thrown from the stage; feeding on the energy like a pack of hungry wolves (no pun intended). Moving from the stage there is no call for an encore. Not to say there was no demand, only because there is no second helping for Brisbane this time.
WolfGang represented a slice of club culture in Brisbane, and tonight it was voiced one last time, properly. I’m glad it died fighting. R.I.P.
