Welcome to Rave Magazine. Please introduce yourself, and be sure to wipe your feet on the mat upon entry…
My name is Jake Rush; I am the singer/songwriter and drummer of Brisbane band Jake Rush & The Bad Habits. And I still live with my Mum.
You claim that your music ranges everything from Motown to Radiohead – how is this possible?
I don’t believe in limiting yourself to a genre, you should do what feels right and be honest to your music. I was raised by two musicians who taught me to appreciate all forms of music. When I write music, there is no audience in mind. I draw on the music that matters to me. I just write what I love and hope others will find something they love in it too
On this same topic, what would be your favourite artist from the Motown roster, and composition from Mr Yorke & Co.?
Geez what a question, besides the Five Dutones, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson, I am going to have to go with Stevie Wonder, purely on the fact I got my tickets in the mail for his upcoming concert the other day. As for Radiohead, You And Whose Army from Amnesiac I think will always be my favourite.
You recently headlined The Zoo – how was this experiences, and what did you learn from it that you’ll employ in future shows?
Yeah it was great night; we managed to get an odd 172 people out on a rainy Wednesday night, so we were over the moon. And boy are those people at The Zoo lovely folk. It took me back to when I was a kid seeing my Dad (Carl Rush) playing at The Zoo, a nice nostalgic feeling playing on that stage.
You’re supporting The Basics alongside Hot Liquid Sex – what does Jake Rush bring to the stage that these two other entities may be missing?
After being on tour with The Basics last year, I dare to say that they are missing nothing as a band. They are exceptional songwriters and musicians, and it will be an honour to play before them. And sure, we have less live experience than the two bands, but we do have a keyboard!
JAKE RUSH & THE BAD HABITS support The Basics at the Sol Bar on Friday Aug 29, then at The Troubadour on Saturday Aug 30. www.myspace.com/jakerushmusic
