From the days when ‘stoner’ didn’t go hand in hand with ‘John Butler’.
I must admit to having a slight chuckle when I read the phrase ‘stoner-rock supergroup’ in the description of Ten East, incorporating members of Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Black Flag and Across The River among others. It seems like an awful lot of effort and organizational skills for a bunch of stoners. How were they able to squeeze in making an album between a Spongebob Squarepants and Doritos marathon? Well, they did, with largely enjoyable results. No surprises that the band started in the early years of this millennium as a semi-improvised jam band, favouring long, repeated passages and droning drum lines. While songs like Sun Filter and Ocean Drone are textbook slow burners (not an insult, they just do it really well), The Robot’s Guide… also includes the other side of stoner rock with big fat riffs on Hexxon illustrating the importance of a staple diet of Black Sabbath.
