When you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll…
After their ground-breaking debut, Sink or Swim, and an impressive follow-up EP, New Jersey’s latest export The Gaslight Anthem have upped the ante on their sophomore album, The ‘59 Sound. Taking their signature sound, which levels out somewhere between Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Hot Water Music, and injecting equal parts of The Cure, Murder By Death and The Get Up Kids, The ‘59 Sound combines country, pop, blues, punk and southern rock into an unholy amalgamation guaranteed to make you want to dance and cry all at the same time. Add to this production by Ted Hutt (Chuck Ragan, Flogging Molly, Street Dogs), which while definitely more polished than their previous releases, retains a grittiness that accentuates the raw passion behind every song. With this record, The Gaslight Anthem have effectively eclipsed their previous efforts and thrown their hat in the ‘punk album of the year’ ring with a ridiculously good chance of taking out the title.
