…local indie-rock five-piece THE JUICE DEBACLE
First off, where did the name come from? Sounds like there’s a story behind it…
When we first started we called ourselves Super Chimp & The Light Machinery, but then we entered this band comp and the guys just randomly put down The Juice Debacle, based on an argument the guys had over what juice to buy after running out.
Your songs have been described as atmospheric, and ‘will make your waters tremble’… is this apt?
I think The Juice Debacle is very much a sum of its parts. Each member of the band has different tastes in music and I think this comes across in the diverseness of our material. I think ‘atmospheric’ does sum it up well, though.
Do you find the Brisbane indie scene to be a supportive or competitive environment?
Overall, it’s a supportive environment. I find that other bands are really easy going and willing to help each other out whenever they can. This feeling of community is one thing we love about the Brisbane scene and it’s something we try and foster wherever we can.
Who do you rate locally at the moment, and why?
I think Sunflower have a bright future ahead of them. They are just so fun to listen to. I also like The Surgeons with their unique brand of electro indie. The Cairos and Grand Atlantic have managed to craft very fine sets of songs pretty much anyone can enjoy. I’m also liking New Manic Spree, Pink Bullet and The Gallant. One band I can’t rate high enough is Jenova Birth from Tweed Heads – these guys have been making weird and wonderful music for years, but no one knows about it, so look them up and enjoy.
Will we see a follow-up to your first album Chop It Up, Chalk It Down anytime soon?
The idea of doing more recordings is always lurking somewhere in the back of our minds. It’s just simply getting the time where we can all get together. As far as material goes, our new songs are packing a bit more punch. We hope to unleash some of these new songs over the coming months.
THE JUICE DEBACLE play UQ’s Red Room this Wednesday Sep 17 with The Frets. You can also catch them Sep 25 at Kitty O’Shea’s, Oct 15 again at the Red Room, and Oct 16 at – you guessed it – Kitty O’Shea’s. www.myspace.com/juicedebarkle
