I don’t think people realise how essential a venue is to an artist’s performance. The Gallery Of Modern Art is perfect for Kate Miller-Heidke’s stripped back, simple show. The pocket rocket with a voice that could make a lemon sweet looks vibrant and energetic onstage, which is surrounded by a packed room of onlookers who, amongst the sidetracking interest of gazing at Picasso’s collection of art, are really here to watch her sing. With a colourfully witty quip about the reception of her single Words on ABC Radio that gets the audience rattling the roof of the GoMA with laughter, she launches headlong into it, full of the vocal trills and showmanship that Miller-Heidke is renowned for. Her voice sounds beautiful and while the instrumentation is either an acoustic guitar, a keyboard, or both, the sound is full and vibrant. Miller-Heidke also takes the time to show off a few new songs from her upcoming album and if these are anything to go on, it will only be better than her debut Little Eve. They are far more rock-orientated, but still have her trademark tongue-in-cheek humour and her operatic lungs. Her covers of Britney Spears’ Toxic and her breathtaking intensity throughout Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer only drives the point home; Kate Miller-Heidke has many cards up her sleeve, and all of them are aces.
