Much like the Dutch, HANNAH HOLLAND loves a good party. She’s hitting town this weekend and keeps SCOTT HARMS in the loop about the goings on in her world.
From her beginnings playing South London house parties, Hannah Holland quickly moved into regular East End club gigs, becoming a long-serving resident at the wild Trailer Trash nights plus the famous Bugged Out! parties held at The End.
“East London’s just a great place to go clubbing, because there are just a lot of underground, exciting parties that happen there,” Hannah says. “If I’m going out, it’s usually somewhere underground and a bit ravey in the East End. And that’s why I like it as well. The scene is still fresh, and there are lots of different types of music and different types of influences and clubs you can go to in London. I think it is a real influence on the music I play.”
London’s East End has historically been the centre of the club universe; year-round, stars, genres, institutions and fashions are all born here; Hannah is creating all four. A star behind the decks and in the studio, her special party blend of tech and electro has enough bass to prick up the ears of most junglists. Her succinctly-named Bastard Batty Bass club brand is now a hugely successful monthly night. Oh, and by the way, did you want some special threads to net you a little extra attention on the dancefloor?
If the answer to the last question was ‘yes,’ then Batty’s clothing line has you covered. Designed by Alex Noble, Batty Bass will be supplying his collection of t-shirt designs and customised trainers. Hannah is thrilled with having Noble on board, whom she describes as an alternative art genius; a perfect fit with the brand. “He does these Batty Bass kind of women that he customises the shoes with – it’s great.”
Of course, Noble’s artwork is only part of Batty Bass; Hannah, together with partners in crime Mama Shamone and MC Chickaboo, combine DJ sets and live performances with more sub frequencies than you can shake a booty at, and Hannah’s penchant for dirty bass-laden grooves, stemming from playing bass in a band when she was 16, is quickly evolving into what could be the next big thing for house – regular podcasts and plans for a Batty record label are sure to attract a new following and ensure the regulars are never far away from their fix.
“There’s lots of different talented people and different things; a lot of the closest people to me are really talented artists,” she says of the Batty team. “So we kinda wanted to do something combined and do something that was a little bit different.”
Hannah will be playing her local dates without Shamone and Chikaboo, but she’ll be more than making up for it with a truckload of jackin’ house tunes, including her new track Banshee, a throbbing tech-house number which will initially see a release on Playtime Records. “I’ve DJed for years and obviously have an ear for what I think is good and wanted to put that down in the studio really, and it just sort of came from that,” she says. “It was a pure kind of love of wanting to do it, really.”
HANNAH HOLLAND plays at Empire this Friday Sep 26. Check out www.myspace.com/hannahholland & www.myspace.com/bastardbattybass for more information.
