(Future Classic/Inertia)
Sydney minimal tech maestro makes good.
Sydney prodigy Deepchild has spent his time wisely in Berlin; the inspiration and influence from the world’s techno capital appears to have manifested in quite a ballsy and underground-sounding album. One thing in particular that he’s achieved – and it’s quite hard to do when dealing with minimal – is to have more than a reasonable amount of variety. Evil Bride of Deepchild is tops; textured synthwork peppered with classic tech bleeps, its many flavours are all able to be separated in the mix without ruining it. Nicoteen Fudge rolls out a peaktime bassline with random (but not silly) sampling, and Norwegian Calculus is simply impressive with its layers of heavily worked percussion. In fact, the skill with the drums throughout the album is one of the most striking features of Departure - the other being that nice crunch present throughout the production. While I don’t think Deepchild has created a record-breaker or scene-smasher, I think he’s going to give things a bit of a shake; the tunes are sure to cause plenty of scuff marks on tech dancefloors.
