Rosie's - Fri Oct 3
Tonight sees Rosie’s downstairs bar converted into Monstrothic, the latest in the string of Brisbane clubs to spin great alternative tunes and showcase some of the local bands that you can’t see on the main drag of the valley. Run by the Obsidian Records crowd, tonight isn’t a regular gig. As such, the merch desk looks more a small shopfront offering a wide selection of the label’s releases and a big box of assorted vinyl.
While collectors were busy rummaging at the back of the room, Brisbane act Nefaria kicks off the debut Monstrothic, playing tracks off their Erase The One Believed EP. Heavily influenced by 90s metal titans Pantera, Nefaria’s sound explores an insidious boogie that makes their mid-tempo numbers stand out.
The Kidney Thieves are tonight’s dark horse, though in fairness to them, there aren’t many specific nu metal/funk/prog bills. Serving as a curious interlude, The Kidney Thieves bend genres and carve a distinct sound for themselves with loose bass lines and liberal doses of irony.
As a general rule, any band that relegates their drummer to where the amps should be and has a wall of amps on the drum riser means business. When local death metal act The Dead take to the stage doing just that, it’s clear why they’re considered leaders of the local scene. The crowd mill around to the stage to see the three-piece as hints of melody sneak into the band’s newer material, which shows an evolution to a more doom-based death metal.
From the cold forests of Tasmania, Psycroptic black metal spin-off Ruins christen Monstrothic with a frightening intensity. Playing cuts from their just-released Cauldron album, the four-piece create an atmosphere that takes tonight to a new level. A level that will hopefully be matched many more times through the lifespan of Monstrothic.
