Another Brisband winging their way to new heights
In contrast to their second album released a couple of years ago, this third effort from Brisbane’s Butterfly Effect has them not needing to go overseas to fully realise their ambitious sound. Recorded on the NSW Central Coast with Forrester Savall (Something For Kate, Karnivool), it brings new layers of complexity and drama to their dynamic but polished approach. But first, they lull you into a false sense of security with some near-classical acoustic guitar on the opening track, Worlds On Fire. When the vocals finally slide in, it morphs into something Muse might meddle with, all breathless and emotive. And then it glides into a ‘70s-style prog-rock, the over-arching sense of an epic being reinforced all the way as it dips and floats, building to a climax in seven minutes. Now that’s an opening! The longest cut here, it’s almost a manifesto for what is to follow. From the choppy surge of The Way and the Edge-like chiming-clanging guitar of In These Hands, to the sombre atmospherics of 7 Days and the yearning thrust of the title track, these guys’ mastery of muscle and mood gives this all the anthemic qualities you could ask for.
