Solid debut of … typical experimentation?
Comatone & Foley’s album consists of the disjointed, meandering sound collages and deconstructive electronic beats like those released on Warp in the ‘90s – and I mean that in a good way. The album showcases a technical ability and attention to micro-production that leaves many tracks sounding instead like measured studies of synthetic rhythms with minimalist, ambient melodic accompaniment. The centrepiece, Electric Sheep, is the only song that stands out as being a deliberately self-contained composition and its guitar break towards the end is made all the more euphoric by its subdued neighbours. Though Comatone & Foley don’t break any new ground in a genre built around a discourse of growth and experimentation, it does offer enough flair and precision to sit comfortably amongst its contemporaries and will certainly excite fans of IDM. Ultimately, it’s worth getting just to hear Electric Sheep.
