The irrepressible folks at Y Knott Productions have embarked upon another crazy live music promotion (hopefully one that won’t leave them in the docks again), this time involving bands and a … er … charter bus. Bustya Mirage is the name of the new venture, and it features a personally hosted mystery bus tour where punters will be taken to three separate locations in an evening to see three of Brisbane’s hottest young bands. The first Bustya Mirage is scheduled for Saturday Dec 13, with Blue Carousel, Idle|Cranes and Stature::Statue the featured acts. Tickets are strictly limited to 50, available via www.oztix.com.aufor $22. Pizza will be provided, as will eskies for BYO purposes. Get in quick for what is sure to be one of the most unusual nights of live music around.

Scott Kannberg (pictured) returns to his much haunted Australia next year with the Laneway Festival. Though not yet announced for our leg of the uber fest on Saturday Jan 31, he will bring his Spiral Stairs guise to The Troubadour Thursday Jan 29. This rather intimate solo show will no doubt host his Preston School Of Industry body of work, and hopefully some classics from that other Slanted & Enchanted act. Tickets are on sale now though all regular outlets.

Support act Dallas Frasca is made welcome by the crowd at The Tivoli – her alterna-faerie dress sense, mean slide guitar skills, and whiskey-hoarse voice (gruff enough to make Melissa Etheridge sound like Regina Spektor) go down well.
When did Xavier Rudd acquire so many fans? Or, more to the point, when did he acquire such gravitas? Tonight, as he steps on stage and showers the crowd with some grungy, Neil Young-style distorted slide guitar, he's a bona fide rock star. He is enthusiastically received, too, playing a mixture of material from his latest album, Dark Shades of Blue, mixed with some gentler, older tracks, such as the ever-popular Messages (which inspires a hearty sing-along). But while his stage presence is more impressive than ever – he even gets out from behind the rack of didgeridoos for a few tracks – he still indulges in some of the excesses of the roots genre, including extended instrumental solos with running political commentary (about George Bush, John Howard, Peter Garrett, the Sea Shepherd …) and an obligatory ten-minute percussion jam that is more wearying than energising. At least he knows where to pay his dues: one of the many covers that litters his set is Young's Rockin' In The Free World. By the time his epic set closes with Let Me Be, I'm all rootsed-out; his hardcore fans, though, leave the theatre grinning from ear to ear.

Thanks to Destroy All Lines, long-time purveyors of touring bands and club night madness, comes the 45-track offering, Dance Floor Anthems. Hand-picked by their very own club DJs and combining some of the best in punk, metalcore, post-hardcore, rock and even a dash of pop in the last 10 or so years, this release is a sing-along party waiting to happen for everyone born in the eighties who ever owned a Blink 182 album or attended a Warped Tour. With classic tracks from Millencolin, Unwritten Law and Mest, unforgettable songs from Underoath, Killswitch Engage and The Used and a plethora of more recent offerings from the likes of The Getaway Plan, Faker, Modest Mouse and more, Dance Floor Anthems has all bases covered and is the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea, a full-blown party and everything in between. Whilst it could be argued that nothing unique is brought to the table with this compilation, it is the beauty of having a decades worth of hits all together and ready to go at the drop of a hat which makes this release invaluable to fans everywhere.
