Before the booze can fully soak in to The Arena’s carpet from last night’s Down show, Brisbane metal fans are once again packing the venue to see reformed gore gods Carcass. The crowd seems more interested in the merch desk than the stage when locals Defamer kick the show off. Playing standout tracks like In Winter It Began and Chorus Of Whispers, Defamer sound lethal, and as certain t-shirt sizes start selling out, the five-piece’s strong, unrelenting blackened death metal sound draws the crowd from the merch desk to the stage. With their distinct pig squeal vocals and double kick drumming, next it could only be Limb From Limb. Grinding their way through cuts from their Rip Him From His Fucking Throne album, the band’s twin guitar sound produces some really cool riffs that gets everyone in the room ready for Carcass. From the coroner’s report intro to opener Inpropagation the crowd goes off. When Carcass last toured Australia most of tonight’s crowd were still in primary school, and their youthful exuberance equates into one gnarly pit. In contrast to the crowd’s youth, tonight Carcass seem old. While they’re all incredibly talented musicians, their stage dynamism seems that of a band that broke up 12 years ago and only just reformed. Aside from Jeff Walker’s self-depreciating one liners and smart arse quips, watching Carcass tonight feels like listening to one of their albums. Set-wise it’s all about Necroticism and Heartwork, while tracks from the bands grindcore opuses Reek Of Putrefaction and Symphonies Of Sickness each get about as much acknowledgement as Swansong – which doesn’t seem right to this grind-crazy reviewer. Although the night couldn’t reach the dream show I had planned ever since Carcass announced they were reforming, being in the audience and hearing tracks like Corporal Jigsore Quandary makes it an unforgettable experience.

If you want nu-metal and pretentious stage antics then go to a slipknot gig (you probably are). The support bands were absolute shyte and if you liked that crap then you are NOT a grind metal fan. That was one of the best gigs I have seen (and i bet i have seen way more than you). If it sounded like the albums than they succeeded totally in replicating a sound that was already untoppable. And yes alot of people would have been in primary school when they toured, including you it appears, and it seems you haven't left yet based on the amateurish review you have given here. I'll wait for Tsunami mag to come out for the proper review this gig deserves. Shame on you |

Written by deceased, on 16-10-2008 11:25 , IP: 203.166.124.3 And Kosher Pigglet Destroyer - you're as jealous as fuck - back then you could get into gigs well under age without ID so I'm probably not much older than you pig brain . Yes the tsunami review is heaps better as i knew it would be. It's not raves fault it's just that particular mag is more dedicated and has a better understanding of heavier music. Perhaps Jeff Walkers snide remarks about 'down' made Hersey see red.. HAHAHAHAHA !! |

Written by Tom H, on 16-10-2008 23:45 , IP: 60.228.188.236 Hey deceased, thanks for the critique (though i thought the shame on you was a bit much). god bless the internet and the ability to review reviews right? i've been getting this all week, so you're not alone on this one. I think you've overstated my attempts to find balance (the review ended by me suggesting the show was an unforgettable experience). but at the same time standing back (though being in the pit for most of the show) and watching with the intent of intellectual critique(it's a faggy journo thing). i didn't expect them to jump around like slipknot (will be out at the 'knot show, because that's my job, i review shows) but surely the fact that mike amott, a dude from sweden, was playing a show in a muggy club, under stage lights, in an australian spring while wearing a jacket disheartened you a little? like how into it could he have really been? didn't you think for just a minute during keep on rotting in the free world that maybe, just maybe, these dudes were thinking about how much money they were making? that night it wasn't the carcass i play very loudly and slam dance to in my bedroom late at night, no, that was 3 old, incredibly talented musicians playing the same amazing tunes they've played every night since they reformed. I had a great time at the show, it was amazing, but it was amazing because we were seeing carcass, a band that we'd never thought would play again. the crowd was worked up, but did carcass even have to do anything besides show up for this to be the case? appreciate the input though. also, most people refer to the genre by it's actual name, which is grindCORE. and yes, i am a fan. i'll make you a mixtape sometime. |
