Valley Studios - Sat Oct 11
Local kids Loomer simply look as though they’ve never set foot on a stage before as they open to a mostly-empty Valley Studios. They have energy, but they obviously need to practice their songs and invest in some better equipment.
Marl Karx consists of a woman on drums who sings, a guy on guitar who screams in falsetto, and a bad joke for a name. There’s not much else to say about them.
My Disco open their famed live show with an untitled work-in-progress from their forthcoming album that, despite consisting of at most three notes, impresses the dense crowd. The trio move things up a gear with You Came To Me Like A Cancer Lain Dormant Until It Blossomed Like A Rose, with Rohan Rebeiro pounding the skins with clockwork precision, Ben Andrews shredding the strings of his aluminium-necked guitar, and Liam Andrews severely repeating the lyrics "You / you came to." Over the next twenty minutes, the trio bring all of their formidable musicianship to the task of playing most of sophomore album Paradise, but the highlight of the set is the closer, another work-in-progress that takes their minimalism and catapults it into an atomistic, spaced-out piece of pure instrumental euphoria. All in all, a severely impressive gig.
