(Someone Good)
Engaging and satisfying instrumental fare
Qua, aka Cornel Wilzcek, is joined by Pivot’s Laurence Pike in giving birth to Silver Red, a three suite instrumental piece born of glitched guitar and piano interspersed with electronica and drums. Silver Red is rich and interesting, new elements constantly appear and disappear, building upon the greater whole effectively. It’s not until part two of Silver Red that the structure of the song becomes clear, returning full circle to an earlier motif midway through before diverting on a new piano tangent. The use of piano is particularly good and provides the backbone to the piece, though guitar takes a stronger hold moving into the third part of the song. The guitar leads beautifully into a powerful drum section and it’s around here that the song really clicks as a piano sequence is introduced and the three elements combine beautifully, the electronic elements taking a back seat to the instruments. Silver Red concludes with the retrospective One Second, while strong, feels too much at odds with the main piece. Nonetheless this is a highly enjoyable release.
