(Independent)
Full of life, yes, but also some fairly overt musical clichés
It’s true, first impressions truly do last. So the image of young Gold Coast resident Kym Campbell noodling on an acoustic guitar with a serene sunset in the background set the scene admirably, letting you know exactly what will be on this CD. That’s right, it’s surf folk and lots of it. Similarly, the opening title track lets you know So Alive won’t be travelling into much uncharted territory. Instead, the record is a myriad of pop structuring and goodwill vibes that are as warmly comfortable as they are unchallenging. Campbell’s voice is pleasant and calming, but the accompanying instrumentation (acoustic guitar, funk-styled bass and of course bongos) are virtually indistinguishable between songs, and drift along with an air of superfluousness. Unfortunately, the laid-back album falters most when Campbell reaches for dynamics to better colour her delicate compositions. Her breathy voice doesn’t quite hold up, and the accompaniment lacks the definition or inspiration to get anywhere under its own steam. Still, not a bad soundtrack to a day at the beach.
