Rosie’s - Sat Oct 18

Without a word or whimper, Brazen Bull’s abrupt opening snaps the silence with such force and volume that I’m peeling these first impressions from the back of my skull. Impressing the many early arrivals with their ferocious onslaught of mechanical speed and time-mocking rhythms, it’s easy to see why this four-piece’s profile is building; their place on the forthcoming Pig Destroyer bill is definitely deserved.

Continuing the run of great gigs after the release of their long awaited EP, A New Day, A New Deathwish, hardcore metallers Severed Link open on an epically heavy note to the approval of a number of dedicated fans at the front who seem to know all the words. Responding particularly to their frequent hardcore breakdown sections, the front row scream along to A Loved Fatality as if it were written expressly for them.

Up from the ACT to launch their very own anticipated album Behold Eradication, refined death-metal merchants Infinitum growl a greeting to the audience whose expectations seem to weigh heavily on tonight’s set. While threatening to take off with tracks like Pure Bread Insane, it is very difficult to get excited about these guys when the backbone of their set is a laptop PC. I wish them good luck in their search for a drummer to fill-out this interesting sound.

Currently possessing one of Queensland’s most brutally distinct sounds are the Sunshine Coast’s very own gore-splattered death band Excruciate, who headline tonight’s Monstrothic event with the tact and taste of an Ed Gein fantasy feast. They open with the solo vocals of I Met Her At The Morgue before drummer Pete Moore offers a drummer’s masterclass with perfect catches and right-angled changes during Strung Up (And Piss Dead?), and I Fucked Her Chunks.
