ImageCentral Coast four-piece ANGELAS DISH have just released Yeah...But Not Tonight from their debut album War On Time, and are celebrating with a national tour. Lead guitarist JOSH HARRIS tells BROOKE MCMASTER it’s all about the songs, the verbal food fights – and most importantly – the cheeseburger challenge.

The band have been constantly on the road since the release of their album in March this year, including headlining national tours and recently jumping on the Rock The Schools bus, which saw them at high schools all over the country. Josh lets me in on what the four larrikins get up to on the road, besides filming a video blog for fans on their MySpace site.

“We hardly ever listen to music on the road. We mostly argue and fight about silly shiz just because it seems to pass time so much quicker. Stuff like, ‘is there more energy in a KFC extreme meal or a subway sandwich? Which is better for you?’ Dumb things like that! It’s funny though, ‘cause the arguments do get heated at times!”

One such argument was turned into a challenge –  to see if the human body could withstand a barrage of cheeseburgers at every McDonalds seen on the road from Gosford to Melbourne (averaging at 20 stores over 9 hours). Josh’s brother Mick states that the rules are: the whole burger must be eaten, including the gherkin, and the cheese must be scraped off the wrapping.

“I’m not scraping no cheese off nothin’!” Josh remarks.

The boys completed the task successfully with no projectile vomiting; perhaps next time they will bump the challenge up to Quarter Pounders.

With so much touring under their belts, this prompts the question that the passion may now be lacking in songs that were once loved. Josh however quashes the thought and says the band will always be proud of their songs.

“Songwriters in bands are always trying to write better songs, more thoughtful lyrics and clever melodies. So it is hard to stay passionate about something you wrote when you were seventeen,” Harris jokes.

“In saying that, I still love the songs. Probably now the most enjoyment I get out of them is getting an email from someone saying that they love a particular track … or seeing a person singing the words at a show.”
War On Time is definitely a much more sedated and commercial effort compared to the EP exertion of Lie Die Lie and My Body Is An Ashtray. As the boys start writing for the next record, we anticipate which direction the songs will go as a result.

“It will definitely be a lot more powerful and honest. When we recorded our first EP we put everything on the line, spent all the money we had and even borrowed some off our parents – which we still owe them – and put the best songs we had written at the time on that recording, because we just didn’t know whether we’d ever get to record again.

“This time around that same eagerness to do our very best is back and the songs will show that.”
Being away from friends and family are just some of the trials and tribulations that come with touring, and this is exactly what the song Yeah...But Not Tonight aptly touches upon.
“It’s about being away from a girlfriend, but not in the traditional ‘I love u baby, I’m so lonely’ way, it’s more sarcastic.

“It was chosen to be the second single because it was so super catchy. The chorus just sticks in your head. Although it’s not as bad as ‘under my umbrella, ella, ella… aye, aye, aye’ though!”

ANGELAS DISH play the QUT Guild Bar on Saturday Nov 1 and The Hive (1pm – AA) on Sunday Nov 2. WAR ON TIME is out now through BNM Records. www.myspace.com/angelasdish
