Sun Oct 26 - Rosie’s

I wasn’t alive when John Lennon was shot. Or when Black Flag were still together. And my memory of Kurt Cobain being alive is, at best, fuzzy. Though witnessing tonight’s show I feel as though I can claim to have seen something as significant as all of these events. Before the Virginian grinders take to the stage, post-metallers The Surrogate manage to overcome a shitty PA to sound on-form. Next, local grind disciples Brazen Bull do their best to whip the crowd into a frenzy. While they only achieve slight animation from a bunch of people anticipating something else, their drumming is amazing and the sound is tight.

Pig Destroyer take to Rosie’s diminutive stage and it takes about two seconds in to opener Hourglass for the crowd to go totally mental. What follows is 45 minutes of manic intensity. This is the type of show I will tell my children about. Failing to procreate, I’ll spend my twilight years in supermarkets explaining to unsuspecting minors how insane PxDx were back in ‘08. Playing predominantly off Prowler In The Yard and Phantom Limb, Pig Destroyer shred their way through stand-out tracks like Trojan Whore, Loathsome and Rotten Yellow. Guitarist Scott Hull is amazing, managing to create monumental riffs in the briefest of songs, the seven-stringer moves around the fretboard with awe-inspiring dexterity. Vocalist J.R. radiates awkward discomfort as leader of the band, spending most of the set facing the drums, as a result tracks like Heathen Temple and Pretty In Casts are brooding and feel emotionally volatile … in the best possible way. An encore of The Dwarves’ Fuck You Up And Get High is almost unnecessary, everyone in the cramped room is already high on some of the most fierce, savagely depraved grindcore ever to make it’s way to this end of the world.

Awesome review Tom! I wasn't there and have little interest in Grindcore, but damn - way to paint a picture!
