Try half as hard, and you’ll be twice as good, seriously

The Reveels are trying too hard. From the awkwardly teenage, clumsily constructed cover art, to the over-produced music contained within, their debut album feels forced. That’s a massive shame, because the songs are actually quite good, and replete with a genuine desperation that’s really fucking exciting. Unfortunately, the locals suffer from clutching at obvious power-trio rock conventions, and it seems unnervingly contrived at times. Tear Me A Hole is a good example. Amongst the ‘70s/’90s rock riffage Paul Milsom’s tortured screams are righteous, but when he rounds them into sexless howls they ring embarrassingly clichéd and hollow. The psych-guitar pop-rock of Hello is gorgeous but staidly produced, with a dry vocal mix that does nothing to hide Milsom’s ungainly rhyming. Early Morning Bus is a little more compressed and grainy, and sounds better for it. The simple, slightly-obscured lyrics paint a vivid picture of a monotonous suburban life through their unsophisticated honesty. The Reveels need to stick to that idea – put their collective animus in a garage with a four-track and just let it flow. I’m interested to see how they sound live, I daresay it’s pretty inspiring.

when recording this l.p I honestly did what i thought would make each song sound it\'s best.I was\'nt concerned about whats in and whats not. Each song has it own way of production and I isolated myself from music and trends in order to do this.There\'s no right or wrong in production in my opinion.There\'s only trends.I\'m annoyed at the fact jakeb \"as above\" has ripped apart this cd because of trends.Could\'nt he have wrote more about the actual songs as opposed to the sound of them.You\'re not steve albini.Do you think joe bloggs at capalaba gives a hoot about production. They want to know about how good or bad the songs are.Not some trend setting,self-opinionated,righteous,interpretation of sound from an inner city,jakeb+1, toff.Ironically I have some other toff in Germany telling me it\'s under-produced.You\'re a good writter jakeb but you missed the punch line as far as the cliche\'s are concerned and you hang me for it.Yes the howls are a rip off.Yes it\'s tongue in cheek.It\'s joe strummer\'s london calling.I guess what I\'m trying to say is that production is a delicate matter and I\'m bewildered by your review about the l.p being over-produced.If you have time, explain to me what you consider to be over produced. Is it the guitars? Most bar 3-4 have 1 guitar, just with 2 mikes on the amp.Cant be vox,there\'s only one per trk.Not 4-5 like the vines or whoever.Maybe it\'s the sprinkling of keyboards and other additives.Fair enough but its only your opinion.Like I said I made the record song by song.I do agree the artwork sux.You got me there.
