Australia’s answer to Wilco
The fifth full-length effort from Ballarat five piece Epicure sees the band dive into the alt-country pool that on previous efforts they only dipped their toe into. From the sinewy slide guitar on One Last Chance To Reach You, Postcards From A Ghost is reminiscent of the work of alt-country genre-definers Wilco. Epicure’s take on the genre sees them exploring reserved melodies and tight instrumentation. While tracks like Ghosts Under The Guillotine are whisper quiet and loaded with a brooding atmosphere, single and album opener Snakes And Foxes charges ahead, energised by a vituperative angst that belies the second half of the album’s sweet undertones. From Blood On My Hands onwards, the lyrical tone of the album changes as vocalist Juan Alban’s tongue softens, and the album trails off with some beautiful, sedate tracks that make listening to Postcards from start to finish a real treat.
