- The 2008 Jagermeister AIR awards were announced this week. Eddy Current Supression Ring won best Independent Hard Rock/Punk album. Whilst AIR didn’t get the genre right, congratulations must go to Eddy Current. Now go buy your singer some new gloves. (See Signal Noise for a full wrap-up)
- Bondi Beach refugee Wes Carr was voted the newest Australian Idol on the weekend. The ex-Tambalane member now has a recording and management deal to contend with, and his first single, You, is already available for digital download.
- Sneaky Sound System and Gurrumul will release their current records on the new DDA format, which can fit hundreds of tracks and thousands of photos. The DDA format can be used anywhere, from a phone to the internet.
- Have Velvet Revolver been dropped by RCA after the band’s second album sold only 301,000 copies in America, and its first did 1.98 million? Ex-Spacehog vocalist Royston Langdon is lead in the stakes to replace Scott Weiland, followed by Sebastian Bach and former MTV VJ Steve Isaacs (The Panic Channel).
- Xavier Rudd’s tune Shelter was played as a wake-up call for astronauts on the space shuttle Endeavour last week. The song was a special request played by the brother of the mission’s commander.
- Was Rove miffed with Snoop Dogg because he seemed more interested in texting on his mobile phone during his interview?
- Fans might be rejoicing at the news of two Coldplay shows hitting Brisbane next year, but those in the other camp can take solace in Chris Martin’s recent promise that the band will break up when he turns 33. Martin is currently 31. Only two more years. Of course, everyone is looking forward to the solo careers of the three other guys in the band.
