A recent survey of Japanese trends found a growing popularity in the phenomena of obaka-aidoru, i.e. ‘dumb idols’ – singers and entertainers adored specifically for their apparent lack of brains. The most notable example of this is TV stars Mai Satoda, Suzanne and Yukina Kinoshita, who regularly appear on a quiz show and have gained a following for, as one commentator put it, “displaying a stunning lack of basic knowledge”. The trio recently formed a band – Pabo, which means “idiot” in Korean – and have just released their debut album. Check YouTube for the single Koi No Hexagon, which suggests the band have gone beyond squares in geometry at least.
