The Zoo - Thu Nov 20

This writer (and The Zoo’s almost-resident) has already withstood two drives to the Valley and back through torrential rain this week, but tonight’s storm fortunately subsides by the time I hop in the car. Thursday being a school night, local electro-rockers Felinedown play an impressive if brief set to a relatively modest crowd. Augmented by synth pads, the four-piece charge through their dark, Garbage-through-Curve grooves, sex-on-legs singer Brodie Wright (wearing a Queen Cleopatra-style gold lamé cape) drawing everyone’s attention with her seductive presence and strong vocals, most prominently on the deliciously sleazy grind of Magazine Dream.

Playing their first ever Australian gig, Toronto, Canada’s “neo-retro” heroes The Birthday Massacre deliver a cracker of a show, launching straight into the downtuned riffage of Red Stars and not slowing down once. To the delight of both diehard fans and scene kids, school uniform-clad lead singer Chibi exuberantly shakes her pigtails to the pulsating industrial beats and airy synths. The set mainly draws from last year’s Walking With Strangers and 2005’s Violet; Looking Glass, Falling Down, Unfamiliar and To Die For are all razor-sharp as the six-piece up the ante with an electrifying stage act. Not a band to hide their ‘80s influences, TBM throw in a breathless cover of Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now before finishing with trademark tune Happy Birthday. Goth & roll!
