The Globe - Fri Dec 5
Though never making the league of Sweden’s best known metal exports, Grave are definitely an underground fan favourite and that shows tonight, at the band’s first Brisbane gig in their 20-plus year history. While it’s a shame that Melbourne extremists Terrorust don’t fulfil the original billing, the show does more than appease Brisbane Grave fans. As the late addition to the bill, Scratch N Sniff are a dark horse. Their crossover-influenced thrash goes unnoticed save the handful of people casually hanging around the sound desk.
Shackles’ set is a treat to watch. The Sydney band’s amalgam of Venom, Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost worship is compelling. Vomitor are something of a crowd favourite, an in-joke that some people get and others don’t, their blackened thrash seems to divide the crowd into lovers and haters. If there was an excise tax on vocal reverb, Vomitor’s set could have provided the government with much needed revenue in the dire financial climate.
Playing a somewhat abbreviated set, Grave annihilate The Globe. Ola Lindgren is relentless through classics like Into The Grave and Christ Insanity. While this show was never going to create waves in the mainstream, it’s sure to be important to those who came out.
