(Kindred Spirits/Rush Hour)
A tasteful ensemble playing too much sugar
Liquid Spirits’ eight members openly worship both soul legends such as Minnie Ripperton and widely embraced hip hop contemporaries like J Dilla. While those teachers always excelled in their natural earthy/not earthy styles, these Dutch soulheads have more difficulty finding an authentic sound that gets you going on their second album. Sounding great technically and displaying an exquisite taste is a long way from making a proper musical contribution. While most songs initially draw attention with a promising 70’s-style futuristic explosion recalling Sun Ra, Liquid Spirits has difficulties finishing things off accordingly. If anything, Liquid Spirits know how to keep heads nodding. All is too sweet, however, and finding your way to the dance floor seems unlikely because you’ll feel pretty sick after so much puking.
