Image“My parents were actually very excited…they were like 'yeah drop out of school, go on tour it's awesome!’” EMILY WILLIAMS picks up some of the finer points of family support from PONY UP’s LINDSAY WILLS.

Sure, we’ve covered the Canadian thing (it sits right next to the ‘Swedish thing’ in our ‘what we like best about geography and pop’ Rave vertical file), but catching up with Montreal’s Pony Up on their first Australian excursion is something of a treat, even if Linsday Wills has only been in the country 36 hours and is still trying to assess which time zone she now finds herself in.

“We got here yesterday at 6am,” Wills starts off. “I feel much better today, yesterday we kind of felt weird. We decided to stay awake all day and then go to bed at 9pm. So by the end of the day we were all a little bit crazy, but after a regular night's sleep we feel pretty normal.” As normal as one can knowing they’ll be on a plane to Adelaide in less than two hours.

But the girls are growing accustomed to the demands of international touring. And in fact they’re a little renowned themselves for shuffling interviews around – so when it was arranged I’d be speaking with Wills younger sister and sometime vocalist Laura, I fully expected it not eventuate.

“No she had to go eat.” The older sibling explains, and so it is that the shuffling universe of Pony Up continues on its gleeful trajectory through the universe.

“That's one of the most fun things about being in a band,” Wills starts off again. “I don't know if we've discussed whether it's more fun to play shows or to record and they're both really great in different ways.” Her comparison to the live versus recording conundrum is interesting. The group’s debut LP Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes was produced by Howard Bilerman, the Arcade Fire drummer and ‘local recording genius’, and buys the type of indie cred only a teaming with Brian Paulson (famed for his work with early Beck and Wilco) can buy. Not that they did really – two of the Pony Up girls play in a local softball league with some of the Arcade Fire and Stars guys…it’s just one of those ‘my friends are really talented and just happen to be in really ace bands as well’ things.

“For our live show there's not that much that we can't do, on the recordings we don't throw a lot of extra things on there that we can't pull-off live,” Wills counters, stating that their Valley Fiesta performance should be as eclectic and spunky as their album eludes. “It's a different kind of energy obviously but I think it's one of the most fun things, I really enjoy playing shows. I like touring, I like being in the routine of it and being able to play music every night.”

Pony Up play Valley Fiesta Night Link stage at 6.15, Saturday. Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes is out now through Inertia
