The Troubadour - Friday Jan 30

It's not too hard to enjoy what Monnone Alone (The Lucksmiths' Mark Monnone and a handy helper on drums) are playing to a handful of people at The Troubadour tonight. Two to three chords in a song, just as many notes in a vocal line, but all done with a jangly pop inflection. Even if they didn't play a Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers song, I'm sure you could still make the connection.

From an alternate universe where Cobain and Vedder became accountants, Greg Brady & The Anchors command the crowd with their fizzy, early ‘90s slacker pop. Brady and his band – a who's who of Brisbane bands from that era including Shane Bruun and Trent Macnamara – look like an odd collection of gym junkies, IT consultants and public servants, but tiny pop gems like I Trust Paper and Machinery Hill keep the audience happy, healthy and ready for act number three.

With a floating band line-up that can occasionally pass 15, the ten member of Still Flyin' now onstage can barely remain onstage. Especially as they jump and whoop around like men and women possessed, playing jubiland and celebratory tunes with a heavy ska influence. With so much revelry, it's hard to believe they still sound cohesive, but their voices, instruments and bouncing fuse together for a superbly entertaining night.
