There’s something all together sacrilegious about standing to the side of stage at a Funkoars show stone cold sober – particularly when the particular show you happen to be at is the first capital city stopover to launch the much lauded second studio album, The Hangover; a recounting of events and life lessons learned since the release of their first full-length effort, The Greatest Hit. Tonight, I am feeling so alert and aware of my senses, that I can only see one of each of the Oars (emcees Trials, Sesta and Hons and DJ Reflux), a mathematically reduced equation to the innumerable amount that I normally see, swinging from one end of the stage to the other like the prime-time rhyme primates they are.
I have such sensory acuity on this occasion that I can taste the anticipation: and it made something stir somewhere in the Loinius Downsouthicus (it’s a medical term... look it up). It was the unmistakeable aroma of no-nonsense hip hop: beer, bourbon, the slimy scent of sweat, just the slightest hint of homelessness and the anxiety of bar staff and bouncers, hanging in the air like the resonant sound of the crowd between songs. I have never seen The Step Inn so alive and undeniably united in the one place for the one reason: to party like it’s $19.99 all you can eat steak night with an open bar.
Playing (as far as I could figure) the entirety of the former JJJ Feature Album, The Funkoars are here to fulfil their ‘Funoars’ alter-ego. Tracks like Black Sally (the first radio single), Reign On The Masses and title track The Hangover have the room moving like it was the night before the day after, making me question the album title choice. No doubt about it: The Funkoars have earned their position as one of the nation’s best acts, in the headphones or live on the mic. Let it reign on ‘em.
